The Elig Hall student residence in Ciudad Jardín, Elche, by Hemic Inversiones, is ready for its opening.
The Helig Hall residence in Elche by Hemic Inversiones is opening its doors. The property that used to be the headquarters of the former Ciudad Jardín clinic, which closed its doors a decade ago, is now almost ready for its new purpose: a student residence. The project, driven by the real estate firm Hemic Inversiones Inmobiliarias, is preparing to open for the next academic year with 52 spots available for students of all types, not necessarily university students; it will also accommodate short-term stays.
The clinic, which closed around the same time as the opening of the Imed Hospital, was sold to the new owners, who have been working on the project for the past few years. With an investment of approximately 1.8 million, EligHall will become the second residence in the city, following the student building on Fossar Street. However, this time it is a much more ambitious initiative. The residence, which has fifty rooms, has 11 rooms per floor plus 8 on the ground floor.
The basement, which used to house the laundry room and boiler for the clinic, has been completely transformed and redesigned by ARN Architects. The ground floor and the first floor, which were originally operating rooms, as well as the second floor, which was used for consultations, have all been converted into rooms. The ground floor now serves as common areas and bedrooms, including converted lofts. The existing layout has been maintained on the third and fourth floors. The basement will be used for common facilities such as a gym, study rooms, and recreational areas. Additionally, each floor has a common dining area, laundry facilities, and a small kitchen.
Furthermore, according to information obtained by this media outlet, the residence is expected to open after summer, in September or October, with around 40 rooms already reserved. Although there are still some actions and finishing touches to be completed, everything is scheduled to be finished by August. Both EligHall Centro and this residence have staff available to assist students during their stay in the residence and in the city, in addition to cleaning, security, internet, and maintenance services, as stated on the company's website.
Advancements in student residences in recent years
With the completion of the construction, as it is now close to becoming operational, the city is starting to offer private services that until a few years ago were limited to isolated rentals or buildings developed specifically for that purpose. Recently, in addition to EligHall Centro and now Ciudad Jardín, which will be the largest one to date, other proposals are emerging, such as Velarde House in the city center, providing Elche with student infrastructure that is still relatively new despite its oldest university, Miguel Hernández University (UMH), being 25 years old. In fact, it is expected that in the coming years, the university's own student residence will start operating after the city council transferred the property in Altabix from the hostel it built years ago. These different initiatives will provide the municipality with infrastructure that has been relatively scarce until now.
